  • Billy Graham funeral: Evangelist's children carry on crusade

Some 77 million saw him in person, and almost 215 million more watched his crusades on television or through satellite link-ups, it has said.

USA evangelist Billy Graham, who preached to millions around the world in a 70-year career, will be laid to rest on Friday in his native North Carolina following a funeral service that will draw thousands of mourners including President Donald Trump.

Mr. Graham died at his mountain home in Montreat, N. C., on February 21. No one was with him except a nurse.

The noon service commenced with the evangelist's family bringing in his casket before an invitation-only crowd of about 2,000.

Some of the best preachers Graham knew - his own children - would deliver personal messages.

"My father's greatest longing has been granted", the younger Graham said. "My daddy, by his example, taught me to think about what I read", she said. His funeral was no different.

"His journey is complete", he said.

And oldest son Franklin, now CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, wrapped up with his father's central theme: that the only path to salvation is to accept Jesus Christ.

"His fingerprints are on this service for sure", family spokesman Mark DeMoss said in a phone interview.

As Graham told reporters in 1994, "I said Jimmy, what they're looking for is a friend".

It is expected to last 90 minutes. You can find the full funeral program here.

On Friday, President Trump and First Lady Melania will travel with Vice President Mike Pence and Second Lady Karen Pence to Charlotte, North Carolina for Graham's funeral.

Other notable guests included television host Kathie Lee Gifford, musician Ricky Skaggs, evangelist Rick Warren and politician Rudy Giuliani.

Graham's sister Jean Ford, 85, eulogized her brother shortly after a private meeting with the Trumps and Pences at the Billy Graham Library, where Graham will be buried. What Mr. Trump might call Graham's "brand" was both evangelical and inclusive. A very special man. "I am deeply touched and grateful".

Billy Graham's family says the casket was made with no upgrades, and only minor modifications to allow for easy transport.

Graham's casket was carried into the U.S. Capitol Rotunda around 11 a.m. Wednesday and removed around 10 a.m. Thursday.

More than 2,000 people, including President Donald Trump, gathered in North Carolina Friday under a large tent reminiscent of a church revival to mourn the Rev.

Graham began talking about dying about 15 years ago, Wilton said.

Ruth Graham returned to North Korea in 1997 and later "summarized the experience as one of the true highlights of her life", according to the Graham Foundation website.

"Everywhere he went he gave the same lovely message".

Graham spoke at Mr. Trump's inauguration, saying, that, "In the Bible, rain is the sign of God's blessing, and it started to rain, Mr. President, when you came to the platform". "Fred Trump was my father".

The Rotunda entrances were draped with black fabric, and Graham's casket rested on a black-draped catafalque beneath the soaring ceiling and its painting, the "Apotheosis of Washington".

Billy Graham said later in his life that he should have steered clear of politics. Graham's, performed "Above All", following tributes from members of the Graham family.

The homestead was built on the family's dairy farm in 1927 on Park Road and later moved to the grounds of the Billy Graham Library. Graham was just the fourth private citizen and first in over a decade to receive the honor.

Earlier in the week, former presidents George W. Bush, a Republican, and Bill Clinton, a Democrat, also came to Charlotte to pay their last respects to Graham during visits that were widely covered in the media.
