On Feb. 24, Delta rescinded a one-time group travel discount for the NRA's annual meeting, and asked NRA to remove the Delta name and logo from NRA's website.
The bill, which focused on allowing tax breaks for corporations bringing the state in line with the new federal tax code, would have allowed a $50 million sales tax exemption on jet fuel.
The CEO of Delta sent a letter to employees on Friday, affirming the company's decision to end a discount for members of the National Rifle Association.
Delta said it would end a partnership that offered discounted fares to NRA members after a gunman killed 17 people in a school shooting in Parkland, Fla.
He said they agreed Delta was discriminating against customers because of political beliefs. "That is not the case", the airline said, adding that the decision was made to "remain neutral" and remove itself from the "debate" on gun control.
The dispute stirred fears of damage to Georgia's business-friendly reputation, and politicians in several other states seized on the furor in recent days, urging Delta to move its headquarters. The day before Delta announced it would reconsider discounts for "politically divisive" groups, Georgia's legislature passed a tax bill.
"If Delta is looking for a state that knows how to treat a business right, then Kansas is the ideal place particularly Wichita", explained Whipple.
On Friday, Bastian wrote: "I have tremendous respect and admiration for Governor Nathan Deal, and thank him for the work he has done on the jet fuel tax exemption". "Our objective in removing any implied affiliation with the N.R.A. was to remove Delta from this debate".
Delta CEO Ed Bastian addressed the Georgia legislature's decision in an email to company employees on Friday.
"I hope they are better at flying airplanes than timing P.R. announcements", Georgia House Speaker David Ralston said after his chamber approved the bill that took away the tax breaks.
Senator Greg Kirk, a Republican out of Americus, responded to the Senate's passage of an income tax cut this week that did not include a jet fuel tax exemption. Bastian applauded the governor in his memo to Delta staff, calling him a "great friend" to the company.
"As I am sure you are well aware, Connecticut is a state where we've put partisanship aside, and passed commonsense gun laws", said Malloy, referring to legislation passed after the 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.
"Please understand that this is not at all motivated from the position of the NRA", Cagle said.
"Even as strong supporters of the Second Amendment, we feel now is the time to have a meaningful discussion about common-sense reform with the intent of finding a solution".
