E-cigarettes deliver cancer-causing chemicals

  • E-Cigarette Use Exposes Teens to Toxic Chemicals

Saliva was obtained within the past 24 hours of e-cigarette use and urine was collected for analysis of 4-[methylnitrosamino]-1-[3-pyridyl]-1-butanol and eight volatile organic chemical compounds. Despite massive gains in cutting cigarette use among young adults over the past few decades, e-cigarette use was the most common tobacco product among USA middle- and high-schoolers between 2014 and 2016, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The researchers write, "The presence of harmful ingredients in e-cigarette vapor has been established; we can now say that these chemicals are found in the body of human adolescents who use these products". In teenagers who used both e-cigarettes and tobacco cigarettes, levels of toxic compounds were up to three times higher than in e-cigarette users only.

The National Cancer Institute said studies in rodent models have found that acrylamide exposure increases the risk for several types of cancer. Teens, even middle schoolers, have taken up e-cigarettes as well.

'Teenagers should be inhaling air, not products with toxins in them'. But on top of that, there hasn't been a ton of research done on how damaging they can be to kids with or without nicotine - until now. In 2016, the CDC reported that 11 percent of USA high schoolers had vaped in the past 30 days.

The latest CDC report found that e-cigarettes were the most commonly used form of tobacco smoked by the 20 percent of high school students who reported any use at all.

"Teenagers need to be warned that the vapor produced by e-cigarettes is not harmless water vapor, but actually contains some of the same toxic chemicals found in smoke from traditional cigarettes", Rubinstein said in a statement.

Additionally, Dr Rubinstein said the chemicals used to keep e-cigarette solutions in their liquid form, propylene glycol and glycerin, are safe at room temperature but toxic when heated to the temperatures required for vaporization.

IPL: KKR appoints Dinesh Karthik as skipper, Robin Uthappa named deputy
He was a stop-gap skipper in some of those franchises, apart from helming Tamil Nadu to their 2009-10 Vijay Hazare Trophy triumph. All the foreign players are really good too. "He will be my ideal foil and together we can take the team forward".

"So while it sounds bad, they don't compare it to cigarettes and they're not telling you what the levels in these devices are", owner of Norcal Vape Keri Hess said.

Other teams have found other potentially cancer-causing chemicals in e-cigarette vapor, including diacetyl, the chemical blamed for causing "Popcorn lung" in workers at microwave popcorn packaging plants.

The relatively small study tested 67 teenagers who reported vaping, compared to 16 teens who both vape and smoke traditional tobacco cigarettes.

Dr Rubinstein said: 'I do not think teens are aware of the risks.

"The way they advertise them is they have different flavors and different flashy packages so they look more like candy", Meza said.

'Moreover, numerous teens in my practice tell me that they feel e-cigarettes are safe and only produce "water vapor"'.
