  • Facebook Chief Information Security Officer Leaving Over Disagreement Over Russia Probe (Report)

Amid escalating fallout from a data leak, Facebook's (NASDAQ:FB) chief information security officer, Alex Stamos, is leaving the company, The New York Times reports.

Stamos responded Monday to the report with a tweet that didn't explicitly address whether he meant to leave Facebook. It's true that my role did change. According to the Times, his departure is partly a result of company disputes regarding how much to share about nation states manipulating Facebook, and internal restructuring leading up to the 2018 midterm elections.

The New York Times had reported Monday that Stamos would be stepping down after clashing with other executives, including Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg, over how Facebook responded to the activity of Russian trolls on the platform.

The spokeswoman didn't directly address whether Stamos was planning to leave the company.

Known for bursts of candidness on Twitter, Stamos has tweeted out his thoughts on a range of issues during his tenure at Facebook.

Envoys hail Brexit progress but no Irish border breakthrough
The Brexit Secretary has said he can "live with" an implementation period of under two years if it helps to secure an early deal. The U.K.is set to leave the European Union in March 2019 and that transition period is created to ease the shift.

The British data analysis company, hired by the 2016 Trump campaign, said the source of the accusations - which it called a "former contractor" - was "misrepresenting himself and the company".

Likewise, Facebook's statement entirely ignored questions about the August date.

In now-deleted tweets sent this weekend, Stamos pushed back against calling the Cambridge Analytica data grab a "breach", explaining that the company had since updated its interface "to remove the ability to see this kind of friend data", a move he said was "controversial with app developers at the time". Facebook suspended Cambridge's access late Friday. Russian influence reached 126 million people via its platform, Facebook said in a report.

An undercover investigation of Cambridge Analytica by Britain's Channel 4 found executives boasted they could entrap politicians in compromising situations with bribes and Ukrainian sex workers, and spread misinformation online.
