Pritzker's main message: He is best able to beat Gov. Rauner due to his unified support from organized labor, his mainstream Democratic views and his wealth, CBS Chicago reports.

Rauner's road to victory in the primary, paved in December 2016 with an initial investment of $50 million from his own coffers, turned rocky toward the finish, as Ives, questioning his bona fides on social issues, made a strong push for conservative voters. He will face the victor of the GOP primary between Gov. Bruce Rauner and state Rep. Jeanne Ives in November.

Jan Schakowsky (D) and Luis V. GutiƩrrez (D). IL also racked up billions in unpaid bills and other debts during the nation's longest state budget impasse, then was unable to stop lawmakers from passing an income tax increase as part of a deal to end the stalemate.

The incumbent governor's Democratic opponent, J.B. Pritzker, has plenty of his own baggage. Pritzker spent more than $60 million to win his race.

In the crowded Democratic primary for attorney general, state Sen. While he may have been the first of three consecutive governors to not end up in jail, his governing style left much to be desired and that ultimately might have done him in as voters opted for a new face in Kwame Raoul.

"His victory came despite an intense effort on the part of pro-abortion and women groups to purge the party of an anti-abortion legislator in a reliably Democratic district", CNN explained. The race was called with 81 percent of the state's votes tallied.

Democrat Betsy Dirksen Londrigan was projected to win in the race against Rep. Rodney Davis (R), in a central IL district evenly divided between the parties.
