Kevin Love Details Struggles With Panic Attacks

  • Kevin Love details scary in-game panicĀ attack

It was something Love did not think he needed to do until the 29-year-old suffered a panic attack during the middle of a game against the Atlanta Hawks on November 5.

There is also a helpline through the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Greater Cleveland that can also offer help to friends and family at 216-875-0266.

Love discussed a game back in November during which he experienced a panic attack, which forced him from the game. "I ended up on the floor in the training room, lying on my back, trying to get enough air to breathe". It was there where Kevin felt like he was about to die.

"Kudos to @kevinlove for sharing this- our #TotalHealthForum with @Nba and @KPShare last week was about the need to address mental health- athletes can be such powerful advocates & it takes courage to talk about it as he has", Storm tweeted.

"It was a wake-up call, that moment". As much as part of me wanted to, I couldn't allow myself to dismiss the panic attack and everything underneath it. It was the opposite.

Ed Hochuli: Longtime NFL Referee Announces Retirement
He now lives in Phoenix and alongside his officiating career worked at the Valley law firm Jones, Skelton & Hochuli. Hochuli, 67, who was the longest-tenured referee, will serve as an independent consultant to the NFL.

Love said he wants to use his story to inspire other men and boys to share what they are going through instead of keeping it "buried inside". Panic attacks can be so unpleasant and scary that many sufferers develop an intense fear of the next one striking, according to the ADAA.

Look around your office, school or household - or into the mirror - and you'll find people close to you struggling with their mental health and wellbeing. I just never thought it was for me. "It's like the playbook said - figure it out on your own, like everyone else around me always had".

Following the panic attack, though, Love chose to see a therapist, who helped trace his issues back to suppressed emotions about the death of his grandmother.

With help from the Cavs, Love found a therapist and learned to accept the fact that he needed help after years of believing opening up was a "form of weakness" that could derail his success. Cavs head coach Tyronn Lue had his team huddled near the bench for a timeout, but Love was having a hard time staying focused. I didn't want to have to deal with everything sometime in the future, when it might be worse. The stigma of mental health - that, because it's invisible it's not real - is one that must be combated.

Resources like Mental Health America, which takes screenings, offers support programs, and helps people suffering from depression and anxiety, are the types of programs that should be as common as over the counter aspirin and cough medicine. Get help and then never shut up about the help you got, in the hopes that your example will lead others to get the help they need as well. Shout out to Kevin Love for that. It's okay to ask for help.
