MASH star David Ogden Steirs dies aged 75 following a battle with bladder cancer.

Actor David Ogden Stiers, best know for his role as Maj. Stubbs paid tribute to the true heart of the man best known for his snooty portrayal of Major Winchester.

His agent tweeted that he died of bladder cancer at his home in Newport, Ore., according to Variety.

"My dear friend and client of 30 years is gone", representative Mitchell Stubbs of Mitchell K. Stubbs & Associates said in a statement to THR on Saturday.

Born in Peoria, Illinois, Stiers went to high school in Urbana with film critic Roger Ebert, before moving to OR and later San Francisco to pursue an acting career. While the Larry Melville "Frank Burns" character he replaced was funnier, Stiers' "Winchester" was far more interesting.

Still, the Boilermakers will not be able to simply show up and expect an easy path to the tournament championship game on Sunday. Pat Chambers made a decision to roll with a smaller lineup featuring Lamar Stevens at the "5" position for stretches of the game.

He starred on the show from 1977 until its landmark final episode in 1983, seen by 106 million people.

He earned a third Emmy nomination for his performance in the mini-series "The First Olympics: Athens 1896" as William Milligan Sloane, the founder of the US Olympic Committee.

He also memorably lent his voice to the character of Cogsworth the clock in Disney's 1991 animated classic Beauty and the Beast. Stiers was encouraged to improvise his lines. He went on to lend his voice to other Disney features, like Pocahontas (1995) and The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996), as well as to a number of animated TV productions, including the 2000-02 Disney series Teacher's Pet.

The actor's regional paper, The Oregonian, reports that Stiers was a gifted musician.

An avid classical music fan, he was a resident conductor for the Newport Symphony in OR and guest conducted orchestras around the country in dozens of productions.
