Adnan Syed, whose murder conviction was the subject of the hit podcast "Serial", was granted a new trial by a Maryland appeals court on Thursday. He was sentenced to life in prison. A Baltimore Circuit Court vacated that conviction in 2016, citing the "ineffective assistance" of Syed's former attorney. On Thursday, CBS Baltimore reported that the Maryland Court of Special Appeals released its decision on the Adnan Syed v.
His story was the subject of the first season of "Serial", which examined the events leading up to and after the murder of Lee.
"Trial counsel's deficient performance prejudiced Syed's defense, because, but for trial counsel's failure to investigate, there is a reasonable probability that McClain's alibi testimony would have raised a reasonable doubt in the mind of at least one juror about Syed's involvement Hae's murder", the opinion reads.
During a hearing in June, Thiru Vignarajah, a special assistant attorney general arguing on behalf of the state, said it was reasonable not to seek out McClain because Syed's lawyer was focused on an alibi placing him at Woodlawn High School, not the library.
The case earned new attention when it was taken up by "Serial", a weekly podcast that saw a U.S. journalist revisit the case and cast doubt on his guilt. Although Syed was initially granted a new trial in 2016, the state appealed the decision. The ruling can still be appealed to the Court of Appeals, the state's highest court, which means Syed's conviction could be upheld. However, Syed's original defense attorney never contacted Chapman about her claims during the murder trial. Prosecutors appealed that decision to the appellate court.
