Sydney Airport delays as computer glitch causes terminal chaos

Sydney airport, Australia's busiest air hub, handled 43.3 million passengers in 2017, up 3.6 percent year-on-year.

Passengers were unable to be processed at the T-1 global or T-2 domestic terminals - leaving hundreds stranded.

'Virgin Australia is working to minimise any disruption to passengers caused by the earlier issues and to reaccommodate any affected passengers.

Virgin Australia flights were also recovering from significant delays, which included two cancellations.

Photos posted to social media show thousands of people stuck in standstill queues.

"We are experiencing outbound delays while we fix this technical issue which we're working to rectify as quickly as we can", she said.

A spokesperson for Sydney Airport told ARN that the technical problems arose from "an underlying technology issue that we were addressing".

The T3 Domestic terminal, which is operated by Qantas, was not affected.

Passengers said they had been waiting for nearly two hours as the departure lounge was cordoned off.

"The safety and security of our passengers is our number one priority and we are pleased to say that all systems are operating as normal", an airport spokesman said in a statement.
