Sen. Bob Corker, a Tennessee Republican who chairs the committee, blamed partisan politics for opposition to Pompeo, saying Pompeo is just as qualified as past secretaries of state nominees Hillary Clinton or John Kerry, both of whom received overwhelming support. 'The Dems will not approve hundreds of good people, including the Ambassador to Germany.

Trump also weighed in on Monday morning, blasting the Democrats on Twitter.

Marc Short, the White House legislative director, said recent weeks have been "incredibly disheartening" as he has had private conversations with Democrats who say Pompeo is qualified but will not vote for him because of political considerations.

"After meeting with Mike Pompeo, discussing his foreign policy perspectives, & considering his distinguished time as CIA Director & his exemplary career in public service, I will vote to confirm Mike Pompeo to be our next Secretary of State", the West Virginia senator tweeted. In the full Senate, he could be safe. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., has not publicly committed to supporting Pompeo, but his GOP colleagues are confident he ultimately will vote for his nomination.

The Foreign Relations panel was due to vote later on Monday on Pompeo, and he could become the first secretary of state nominee not to win the panel's support. "As such, I ask and hope Senator Jones will put aside partisanship and defer to the wishes and judgment of President Trump and vote to confirm Mike Pompeo as Secretary of State".

USA Today's editorial board has been outspoken in its opposition to President Donald Trump, and the Daily News' board is known for being consistently on the left. 'But I believe he has an extensive knowledge of world affairs that has been enhanced by his time at the Central Intelligence Agency'.

The Yarmouk refugee camp and the surrounding settlements remained the last stronghold of terrorists in the suburbs of Damascus.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Monday urged Democrats to give the green light to Pompeo. Those who oppose him for the State Department job say he is too hawkish and socially conservative - he opposes gay marriage and has had ties to anti-Muslim groups - to be the country's top diplomat. He made his decision after sitting down with the nominee.

Still, some observers predict a historic setback for the president in the Foreign Relations Committee vote.

Republicans have a 51-49 Senate majority.

REPORT WITHOUT A RECOMMENDATION - The committee can vote to send a nomination to the full Senate without a recommendation, which would still allow a vote.

"Democrats, especially on the Foreign Relations Committee, are really engaged in shameful political behavior, ' Cotton said Sunday on CBS" 'Face the Nation'. A lack of Senate support for Pompeo could spell trouble for Trump who already sees the former Kansas congressman as "the nation's chief diplomat", White House counselor Kellyanne Conway recently said on a conference call.
