  • Atletico hit back to earn draw with Real Madrid

Cristiano Ronaldo's 24th goal in 15 games for Real Madrid this year was not enough to earn his side a derby victory on Sunday as an Antoine Griezmann equaliser secured Atletico a 1-1 draw.

Nevertheless, the former Real Sociedad player has scored a league goal vs. Madrid in each of the last six seasons and on his last three visits to the Bernabeu.

Atletico Madrid is competing in the UEFA Europa League, where they beat Sporting CP 2-0 on Thursday at Wand Metropolitano Stadium in the first leg of the competition's quarter-final.

Ernesto Valverde's team are are now 11 points clear with just seven games left to play.

Gareth Bale, Lucas Vazquez and Maro Asensio are all in line for a start, with Isco, Luka Modric and Karim Benzema all rested. However, their lead lasted less than five minutes as Griezmann capitalised on some poor defending to equalise it at 1-1.

The first opportunity of the match fell to Real Madrid in the ninth minute, but Ronaldo could not bundle the ball past Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak from close range after meeting a flicked header from Bale.

Juanfran was fortunate to see a challenge go unpunished when Kroos darted into the box on the end of a short corner and frustration seemingly lingered for the Germany midfielder as he was booked for a crude hack at Griezmann on halfway.

Marcelo came closer to the opener four minutes from half-time, dancing inside Vitolo to thud a 20-yard strike against the crossbar.

Madrid remain four points further back in third, unable to close the gap on their neighbours despite Cristiano Ronaldo volleying in his 22nd goal in the fixture in the 53rd minute.

Real Madrid played some sublime football in the first half. Bale nearly had it but put a hard header wide, while Sergio Ramos nodded past from a corner and saw his curling free-kick tipped over by Jan Oblak. Bale was given the freedom of the Bernabeu by the Atletico defence on the left wing and he made them pay by sending an inch-perfect cross into Ronaldo to score with a well-taken volley at the back post - his 650th career goal.
