Cynthia Nixon said during an interview on "The Wendy Williams Show" on April 4, 2018, that she would legalize and tax marijuana to "capture some of the revenue". Nixon explained her motivation to run against Democrat and incumbent Governor Andrew Cuomo came from President Donald Trump's election.

Adding, "If we don't like the direction our government is going in, we have to step up".

Andrew Cuomo's office is defending the state's response to an upstate village's chemically contaminated water supply after Democratic gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon said his administration "ignored" the problem. "People talk a lot to me about being a celebrity entering this race". Still, she's more than happy to praise the closet's contents: "We love the clothes! There is such an appetite for real progressive change in New York City". I'm running as a New York City subway rider, but also I have been fighting for better and particularly more equal funding of New York state's public schools for the last 17 years.

On Wednesday morning, Nixon did her first TV interview since announcing her campaign, on hyper-New York but nationally syndicated Wendy Williams Show.

Williams then asked Nixon how black women can help her be elected governor, to which the actress was quick to emphasize that the women are the "backbone of the Democratic Party", echoing what DNC head Tom Perez said after black women proved to be a key factor in the Alabama special election win of Democrat Doug Jones a year ago. Nixon then made a very valid point that "black women are going to stop showing up for the Democratic Party if the Democratic Party doesn't start showing up for them".
