  • Mark Zuckerberg Faces Congress -- Live Analysis

When asked by Democratic Sen.

Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, appeared at Capitol Hill today to discuss the future of Facebook in light of recent security breaches by a third party.

That's a departure from how internet companies have traditionally viewed themselves - as neutral platforms generally not responsible for what people post and share on their services.

"Yes, there will always be a version of Facebook that is free", Zuckerberg said during a joint hearing of the US Senate Judiciary and Commerce committees. This, he says, raises "moral and legal" obligation questions.

Now, Facebook recognizes the need to "take a more proactive role". But as its systems improve, it'll likely be able to remove other content too.

This is not the first time Zuckerberg has shown or hinted that he cares for his privacy in ways the regular Facebook users don't.

As many as 87 million users was improperly obtained by the political consulting and data-mining firm Cambridge Analytica.

Stock Market Rallies As China's President Eases Fears Of Trade War
If the two sides can't agree on a solution, the next step could be for Beijing to request a ruling from a panel of trade experts. Still, the White House also admonished China to take concrete action on USA complaints about unfair trade practices.

In a rare light-hearted exchange during his public grilling before USA senators Tuesday, the Facebook CEO told Sen. Linsdey Graham (R-SC) pressed Zuckerberg to reveal who Facebook's chief competitor is.

"Definitely go through and do a privacy checkup and remove the apps that you're not using anymore or you just don't want to have and definitely make sure they don't have public access or any kind of high level access to your account", Pugh said.

Behind the scenes, Zuckerberg and his team did mock hearings over the past week in a conference room at Facebook set up to look like a congressional hearing room.

It is also struggling to deal with fake news and alleged foreign interference in elections, disclosing in September that Russians under fake names used the social network to try to influence U.S. voters in the months before, and after the 2016 election, writing about inflammatory subjects, setting up events, and buying ads. And I'm sorry. I started Facebook.

The company's delay in identifying Russian efforts to interfere in the 2016 election is "one of [his] biggest regrets in running the company", Zuckerberg said. Dick Durbin that no, he would rather not share personal details of his life with the U.S. Congress.

But he didn't explain why and how Cambridge Analytica still managed to misuse the personal data afterwards.
