Forget the Doorbell, Amazon Now Delivers Packages to Your Car

  • Amazon will put a package right in your vehicle

Now, with some app-based permissions and remote, outside-originated vehicle unlocking capability, a package can be conveniently inside your General Motors vehicle. The company hopes this new delivery system will make receiving packages more convenient, since customers can be just about anywhere to receive their goods.

Last year, Amazon launched Amazon Key, enabling the e-commerce giant to unlock customers' front doors and leave packages inside their homes.

For now, the service will be broadly useful in cities such as Dallas, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Chicago, and it's coming to more areas soon. GM owners must have an active OnStar account, and Volvo owners need an active On Call account.

Amazon Key, which was launched a year ago, also allows homeowners with WiFi-connected locks to unlock their front doors remotely so packages can be left inside. Users can enter locations where their auto is kept such as a parking lot at work or other publicly accessible place.

Amazon says it uses multiple layers of verification to ensure the security of in-car deliveries.

Prime members register their auto model, complete checkout online as they typically would, and then park their vehicle at the designated delivery address on the scheduled delivery date. Now it's hitting the road and letting Prime members in the USA use Amazon Key for in-car delivery of orders. The service is secure and customers can track when their vehicle was unlocked and relocked in the App's activity feed, and rate their in-car delivery.

Money vanishes from hundreds of Ulster Bank accounts in the Republic
An urgent investigation is underway with IT staff working through the night to resolve the problems by Wednesday morning. Ulster Bank customers find themselves let down again by their bank that they trusted would mind their money.

In any event, it will require an app that has significant access to personal information and now property as well.

Customers must download the Amazon Key app to which they can link a connected vehicle.

While this new option may be popular among customers that are concerned about those menacing porch pirates that have risen to prominence in recent times, it could also open up additional cans of worms down the road.

The announcement of the new service comes at a time when Amazon is locked into a fierce battle with Walmart and other retail rivals for home delivery services. OnStar itself has faced similar questions in the past. When the delivery person reaches the vehicle, Amazon will verify that he / she is the authorised person and unlock the auto. Volvo did something similarly in Goteborg several years ago, with smart auto keys granting couriers access to the trunk of parked cars.

The idea is similar: it allows users to remotely unlock their doors to let people or services in, and packages can be delivered inside the home rather than left outside, where they could be stolen.
