  • Former Google AI chief joins Apple to make Siri better

In an October 2017 interview with MIT Technology Review, Giannandrea pushed back on Elon Musk's prediction that artificial intelligence could possibly lead mankind into a new world war.

Giannandrea will be one of 16 Apple executives who report directly to Tim Cook, according to the New York Times.

However, some might argue that the main reason why Apple made a decision to equip iPhone X with a bezel less display is because Samsung did it with Galaxy S8. AI programs - essentially computer algorithms - analyze huge amounts of data to identify patterns and predict outcomes. Nonetheless, what really matters is that Apple is constantly looking to improve its smartphones and a great example of that is the addition of John Giannandrea to its team.

Keeping in good company, Giannandrea - at least on LinkedIn - is connected to William Tunstall-Pedoe, a British software developer who invented Evi, one of the first virtual assistants for mobile phones. Giannandrea joined Google in 2010 after the company acquired his start up Metaweb Technologies.

To fortify AI division, Apple has rolled out other high-post vacancies in the field.

The monthly murder rate in London has overtaken that of NY for the first time in modern history, according to official figures. Four teenage boys - two aged 16 and two aged 15 - have been charged with GBH after appearing at Stratford Youth Court.

The company has been slow-moving on most things AI, from barring employees from publishing AI research up until December 2016 to joining in late to an ethical AI research consortium co-founded by Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Amazon and IBM.

Google and Facebook have large sets of data from billions of users around the globe.

Apple does not want to collect and use customer data, and this has become a major issue. Therefore it has access to the public records only.

"John shares our commitment to privacy and our thoughtful approach as we make computers even smarter and more personal", the New York Times quoted an email from Cook to his staff. His company's work formed the basis of Google's Knowledge Graph, which brings up information at the top of search.

Apple has poached Google's head of artificial intelligence, John Giannandrea, in its effort to keep up with the deluge of AI products being launched by competitors like Google and Amazon. He's now in charge of Google's entire AI unit and will now focus on how AI will be implemented across its products.
