  • WATCH Terminally-ill Limerick woman agrees €2.5m settlement over cancer misdiagnoses

The issue was brought to light this week following the tragic case of Vicky Phelan. She settled her High Court action against a United States laboratory for €2.5m this week.

The new figures emerged two days after mother-of-two Vicky Phelan, who has terminal cervical cancer, was awarded €2.5m in the High Court.

This comes hours after a helpline set up for women concerned about their cervical screening result is now fully operational after a "technical glitch" led to a delay this morning.

A smear test is undertaken to detect any abnormality which would be indicative that there is something untoward happening.

She claimed there a number of cases in Donegal where women have been told their smears were clear when that was not the case and women have developed cancer.

A 43-year-old woman who was given mistaken test outcomes and is now critically ill with cervical cancer has settled her High Court activity against a United States lab for €2.5m.

The HSE said treating clinicians were informed about these findings and were asked to communicate with their patients directly where clinically appropriate.

What makes it even more different is that the best players won't necessarily be the first players selected. Saquon Barkley canceled a bunch of media appearances on Tuesday and now we know why.

The Health Minister has already expressed that he no longer has confidence in CervicalCheck management, after it was revealed that 206 women were misdiagnosed following routine smear tests.

Ms Phelan spoke movingly of the impact the dramatic revelations of the last week and her powerful speech outside the High Court has had on her family. "Doing so at a late stage, in the knowledge that you could have been diagnosed earlier is a harrowing experience, and it is saddening to see cancer patients on the steps of the High Court", it said.

It's understood that if these women had been referred onwards, the cancer could have been prevented or treated earlier. The Society has full confidence in the service, which we expect will progress from smear to HPV testing as a first-line test in the near future.

In relation to queries from RTÉ News, as to whether there are any other cases of missed cervical cancer diagnoses, the HSE said it was not possible to get this information at this time of the evening.

However, it acknowledged that there will "never be a health service without some degree of human error".

A terminally ill mother of two, who was wrongly told she didn't have cancer in 2011, has settled her case against a USA lab for €2.5m. This represents a breakdown in communication.

He joins the likes of Simon Harris who supports repeal.
