Michigan's Boston Marathon victor didn't realize she was winning

Sellers crossed the finish line in second place at the prestigious 26.2-mile race, in rain-soaked conditions, as a virtual unknown. It was so cold and wet she couldn't even squeeze her water bottle.

But she won her first major marathon in 2:39:53, with compatriot Sarah Sellers, who works as a nurse, coming in second in 2:44:04.

But American Desiree Linden pushed her way through a powerful headwind and cold rain and up Heartbreak Hill to triumph at the Boston Marathon - the first time a US woman has won in 33 years.

There were 174 ME entrants and the temperature was 38 degrees at the start of the Boston Marathon. Sellers told the Post: "I mean, I still can't believe I finished second". "Helping her helped me and I got my legs back".

The combination of the wind and rain made conditions hard, and it was the coldest Boston Marathon in 30 years.

"She said, 'well, my brother's running Boston and I want to beat him, '" Pilkington smiled.

"I think I grabbed her shoulder and was like, 'Are you OK?' And she was like, 'Nah, I just don't feel good, '" Flanagan said.

She also qualified for the US Olympic trials.

And she despite one of the worst weather days in marathon history, Mary ran the first 15.5 miles in the heavy wind and torrential rain.
