NASCAR at Bristol on Sunday

BRISTOL, Tenn. - Persistent rain Sunday at Bristol Motor Speedway forced NASCAR to postpone the conclusion of the Food City 500 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup race until Monday.

The Food City 500 was initially scheduled to begin at 2:13 pm ET on Sunday, but it has now been moved up by one hour and rescheduled for 1:13 pm ET.

Larson started his No. 42 Chevrolet on the Busch Pole for this spring race a year ago and led a race-best 202 laps - consecutively from the drop of the green flag - before finishing sixth.

Paul Menard took advantage of strong pace from all four Penske-prepared Fords to place third before the race stopped, ahead of pole sitter Kyle Busch - Hamlin's Joe Gibbs Toyota team-mate - in fourth. Racing was halted three times Sunday due to wet weather.

Some other drivers that could contend for the win include Kyle Busch's teammates Erik Jones and Denny Hamlin. Busch is a favorite for a reason, after winning the summer race and with five straight top-three finishes.

Last weekend's race in Texas marks the first time in the 2018 season both Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series rookies posted top-10 finishes in the same event.

One driver Larson won't have to worry about is Ryan Blaney, who appeared to be one of the top contenders as he led 100 of the first 118 laps before an accident in which two slower cars wrecked in front of him and he crashed into them.

Chris Johnson's Forecast | An active weather weekend ahead
WIND ADVISORY for Saturday as winds could gust as high as 45 miles per hour with gusts up to 50 miles per hour along lakefront. Temperatures will struggle to recover much from that plummet on Sunday as highs for most will likely be mired in the 40s.

Add in that the 21-year-old had the top 10-lap average in the first practice Saturday and there are the makings of a first career Cup win.

AccuWeather predicts temperatures in the low-40s with a 40 percent chance of rain into the early afternoon.

There will be a competition caution after 45 laps to reassess the track. Mere weeks after Lowe's announced they're leaving the No. 48 team and seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson, someone has stepped up and said they believe in NASCAR's direction to stick around long-term.

"You never know how the track is going to change, especially with the VHT (sprayed in the turns to add grip)", he said. He started from the pole position and led a race best 202 laps in last year's Spring race at Bristol but finished sixth.

Jimmie Johnson won last season's April Bristol race in his #48 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports.

However, the forecast still calls for steady rain through Monday morning.
