Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said that his candlelight march at India Gate was not "political" but instead out of a concern for the safety of women in the country.

What happened to Asifa at #Kathua is a crime against humanity. UP Congress Committee and youth congress workers also joined the protest. He said the country needs a change where women could feel safe. Congress MLA Aradhana Mishra said that seriousness of the yogi government for women could be gauged from the fact that chairperson for the state women's commission is yet to be appointed.

"This is an issue concerning women", he said, adding that people from all parties as well as the common man was at the India Gate.

Gandhi tweeted "What have we become if we allow politics to interfere with such unimaginable brutality perpetrated on an innocent child".

Congress president Rahul Gandhi has tweeted that he hoped Prime Minister Narendra Modi would consider fasting over rising incidents of crimes against women in Uttar Pradesh, which is ruled by the BJP. Calling the Kathua incident a crime against humanity, Gandhi has said the crime can not go unpunished.

Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said the "farce of a fast by the Modi government and BJP" on the April 12 should really be a fast to seek an apology over a range of issues including the banking frauds, leak of CBSE paper and dilution of SC/ST Act.
