One study examines state implementation of medical and adult-use marijuana laws with opioid prescribing rates and spending among Medicaid enrollees, while a second study examines prescribing patterns for opioids in Medicare Part D and the implementation of state medical cannabis laws.

The National Safety Council reported that employers are taking the biggest toll in the crisis- losing eligible workers to addiction, reporting that "certain industries like construction and manufacturing, report increasing difficulties in filling open positions".

Both research teams suspected that if this were true, then medical marijuana might ease opioid use in people with chronic pain. Although many individuals believe that the opioid crisis is mainly focused on the overprescription of these drugs, it is clear that there is a large group of individuals who are using black market opioids, that could benefit from marijuana use instead. Two studies, published on April 2nd by the Journal of the American Medical Association reveal a net decrease in opioid prescriptions in states with medical cannabis laws for Medicare and Medicaid populations.

Drug overdoses killed almost 64,000 Americans in 2016, with two-thirds of deaths involving a prescription or illicit opioid, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported last week.

Governor Gina Raimondo describes the opioid crisis an epidemic, "In the past five years, we've lost more than 1,200 Rhode Islanders to overdose". Two new studies in the debate suggest it may. Fourteen states plus the District of Columbia had such a law from the beginning of that time; nine other states joined them during the years the study covered. While some deaths may be due to illegal narcotics like heroin, others are caused by opioid medications like oxycodone, fentanyl, hydrocodone, morphine, and methadone.

De Villiers reviewed but replays confirmed the umpire's original decision and he walked off having made 69 from 119 balls. Sayers took two wickets in three balls late in the day, sending back de Villiers and Kagiso Rabada in his 2-64 on debut.

If the latest research is any indication, those actions might simply make the opioid epidemic even worse.

In this Thursday, Feb. 15, 2018 file photo, a woman holds the prescribed medical marijuana product used to treat her daughter's epilepsy after making a purchase at a medical marijuana dispensary in Butler, Pa. The weight of that evidence is "now hard to ignore", said Bradford, who said he thinks federal regulations should be changed to allow doctors to prescribe marijuana for pain treatment.

Since 2016, there has been an average of 115 deaths daily from opioid overdoses.

"Marijuana is one of the potential alternative drugs that can provide relief from pain at a relatively lower risk of addiction and virtually no risk of overdose", Wen and Hockenberry write.

Most people, including teenagers, with an opioid-use disorder start out with a legitimate prescription for the drugs from health care providers for pain management.
