It brought an array of film industry professionals to the Cannes red carpet, including actresses Salma Hayek and Jane Fonda, "Wonder Woman" filmmaker Patty Jenkins and French director Agnes Varda, a recipient of an honorary Palme d'Or at Cannes.

Both Stewart and DuVernay are members of the Cannes Competition jury this year.

The official selection for this year's festival, meanwhile, features three films directed by women out of a total 21, a figure that has prompted widespread criticism. It's all part of a demonstration that was planned weeks before the festival opened by growing "50/50 by 2020" movement - a collective launched on the heels of the #TimesUp Legal Defense Fund which aims for equal representation across the spectrum in Hollywood by 2020.

"Women are not a minority in the world, yet the current state of our industry says otherwise", the statement said. The stairs of our industry must be accessible to all.

The hushed, symbolic protest is going to be kept ahead of the premiere of French film maker Eva Husson's "Girls of sunlight", which is about a Kurdish battalion of feminine troopers. "In the same period 1688 male directors have climbed these very same stairs".

SpaceX Is Risking Lives With Its Rocket Technology
The launch of the first Block 5 is targeting a two-hour launch window opening at 4:12 p.m. from Kennedy Space Center. Reusability is key to SpaceX's long-term vision, which involves helping humanity become a multiplanet species.

The other two - Nadine Labaki's "Capernaum", and Alice Rohrwacher's "Happy as Lazzaro" - are to premiere next week.

This comes after numerous similar protests at awards shows this year.

The festival supported Saturday's protest.

After missing last year's Cannes Film Festival, Cheryl put her best foot forward on Friday (11 May) night, hitting the red carpet just hours after arriving in the town. At a press conference on Monday, festival director Thierry Fremaux said that Cannes would look to select a higher proportion of films directed by women in future. But he has likewise indicated that the festival is now reanalyzing its procedures and is now making its own selection committees sex balanced.
