Afghanistan: Explosion, gun battle near Interior Ministry compound

Two other suicide bombers then clashed with the security forces, a spokesman for the provincial police chief, Shapoor Ahmadzai said.

Reuters reports that two loud explosions and gunfire were heard in proximity of the Interior Ministry compound and that police inside reported that the facility was under attack by militants.

On the same day, at least three Afghan police officers were killed after a group of suicide bombers launched an attack on a police station in the eastern province of Logar.

However, he did not provide further details about the attack. A provincial official who spoke to Stars and Stripes on condition of anonymity confirmed that Afghan security forces had withdrawn from the governor's compound and police headquarters.

Attacks in recent months claimed by either Taliban or Islamic State fighters have killed scores in Kabul and elsewhere, demonstrating the Taliban's capability to carry out strikes even in the heart of the country's capital. Sources also said police have not handed over the armored vehicles, used by the attackers, to the NDS for investigation.

In a statement Wednesday, the U.S. command in Afghanistan said the strikes against those behind a recent attack in the Helmand provincial capital of Farah resulted in "more than 50 casualties".

Security around Kabul has been on high alert in recent days with more checkpoints and patrols as the government warned of attacks by the Taliban on government installations. He said the victims included mechanics who had been contracted to fix Afghan army vehicles.
