Former Arsenal captain Arteta has been heavily linked with succeeding Wenger, whose 22-year reign as manager came to and end at Huddersfield on Sunday.

Spaniard Arteta, 36, took up a role in Pep Guardiola " s coaching staff at Manchester City in 2016 but has never managed a team.

"I don't want to influence that publicly because for me I believe it is important that they make their choice in an objective way and after once they make a decision I will support them", he said.

The Gunners are reportedly going to speak to another former Arsenal star, Thierry Henry, next week about the job but Wenger believes Arteta would be ideal despite his lack of experience.

Arsenal are planning to appoint their new manager before the World Cup begins in Russian Federation on June 14.

"I want to continue to defend my ideas of football, that's for sure".

"The one thing I can say for sure is that I will continue to work, but do I want to continue to suffer as much?" At that time when Wenger said he could not combine his TV punditry role at Sky with a full-time job with the under-18 team.

Arsenal - who finished without a trophy last season and failed to qualify for next term's Champions League - are confident a new manager will be named before the World Cup begins on June 14. Although he has gained crucial experience working closely with Guardiola, the Spaniard has yet to test himself in a top job and with Arsenal now on the slide and missing out on the top four again this past season, it's a risky strategy to go with an untested manager. "As I said in my speech on the pitch after the Burnley game, I'm a fan above all".

"I have had no discussions with them recently, I can tell you that in all honesty", he added.

"I have lived and breathed football all these years and it's a passion - I can't imagine doing anything else".
