Wolfe's agent confirmed the sad news to the New York Times.

Wolfe was born March 2, 1930 and grew up in Richmond, Virginia, the son of an agronomist father and an arts-oriented mother.

Author Tom Wolfe, whose novels The Right Stuff and The Bonfire of the Vanities were made into feature films, has died at age 88.

Wolfe began his writing career as a newspaper reporter, first for the Washington Post and then for the New York Herald Tribune.

His first book The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby was a collection of essays originally published in Esquire magazine. He also edited a volume of work by writers Truman Capote, Joan Didion, Hunter S. Thompson, Norman Mailer and George Plimpton, titled The New Journalism.

A pioneer of new journalism, Wolfe wove ornate tapestries through his fervent prosaic style and vivid storytelling techniques. Nine years later and in a more restrained style than some of his earlier works, he wrote The Right Stuff about the first seven United States astronauts and test pilot Chuck Yeager who came before them. In addition to the aforementioned "Bonfire of the Vanities" and "The Right Stuff" - novels that were later recaptured as Hollywood feature films - he wrote theatrical and entertaining stories for magazines such as Esquire, Harper's, and NY magazine.

Wolfe was also a style icon, known for wearing a crisp white suit everywhere he went. He is survived by his wife Sheila, the cover designer for Harper's Magazine, his daughter Alexandra, and son Tommy.
