  • Across England more than 4,000 seats are being contested in around 150 councils- including all 32 London boroughs as well as every ward in Birmingham Manchester Leeds and Newcastle

Ben Bradshaw, the backbench Labour MP told the BBC the party "should be doing much, much better than we have been doing nationally" if it was on course to win the next general election.

"There's a common misconception that Brexit has already happened - but it hasn't happened".

Outside London the Conservatives benefitted from the collapse of the UKIP vote, with numerous anti-EU party's seats turning blue.

"There are a number of people across Havering who historically have voted for UKIP and I think it is a great shame that now their voices will not be represented".

"Pallion in particular I have to highlight, as just months ago it was the leader's ward and in the space of however many months it's now a majority Lib Dem ward with our strongest vote share in the city".

Meanwhile London is the major battleground after recent polls pointed towards a substantial swing to Labour, and Corbyn's party will also be hoping to win control of Tower Hamlets and Barnet and possibly even the flagship Conservative councils of Wandsworth and Westminster.

For UKIP, the highs of 2014 have turned into near obliteration, with the party losing 84 seats by 6.30am and retaining just two.

The Conservative Party has won control of Barnet in an underwhelming night for Labour in London at the local elections.

The Liberal Democrats and Labour each conceded a seat to the Tories, the Lib Dems lost Tilehurst and Labour lost Kentwood in Thursday's local elections. The council has been run by the Conservatives since the time of former prime minister Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s, when it was a symbol of the late leader's low-tax policies.

After 14 years of Tory rule at Trafford Council it went to no overall control.

Outside London, the Conservatives regained control of councils in the pro-Brexit regions of Peterborough and Basildon, largely at the expense of the anti-EU UK Independence Party (UKIP).
