  • Hamas offers Israel quiet on Gaza border if airstrikes reduced

Tuesday, UN Ambassador Nikki Haley is fighting back.

Palestinian medics carry on a stretcher a protester injured during clashes with Israeli forces along the border east of Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip on May 15, 2018 after demonstrations marking 70th anniversary of Nakba - also known as Day of the Catastrophe in 1948 - and against the US' relocation of its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. There is no justification for the killing.

At least 59 people, including unarmed women and six children, were shot dead while more than 2,700 others were injured by Israeli soldiers during protests over President Donald Trump's controversial relocation of the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv, a move that has been praised by Israelis but has enraged Palestinians and the governments of other countries, including in the European Union, and Iran and Russian Federation. One Israeli soldier was wounded.

The surge in fatalities led South Africa to recall its ambassador in Israel "with immediate effect until further notice" while condemning the deaths "in the strongest terms possible".

Guatemala inaugurated its Israel embassy in Jerusalem on Wednesday, becoming the first country to follow in the footsteps of the United States' deeply controversial move.

According to the Times of Israel, European foreign ministries on Monday slammed the United States decision to move its embassy to Jerusalem, saying "it violates worldwide law, is unwise and is likely to exacerbate tensions, shortly before the embassy's dedication ceremony began in Jerusalem".

Theresa May told ministers to get 'hands on' over customs dispute
One cabinet minister told the Guardian: "The prime minister wants to find a way through this that keeps the party together". Under this proposal, Britain would collect tariffs on goods entering the country on the EU's behalf.

While no fatalities were reported in the West Bank, where limited clashes took place between demonstrators and Israeli security forces at several checkpoints, the situation in Gaza deteriorated throughout the day, particularly along the perimeter fence, said Mladenov.

"These people want their voices heard", Mladenov said, adding that "their anger, if not channelled in a constructive manner, will lead to more destruction and suffering".

"The blood of innocent Palestinians is on the hands of the United States", he said.

The cycle of violence in Gaza needs to end, said Mladenov.

The US and Guatemalan moves break with decades of worldwide consensus. "The status of Jerusalem should be determined in a negotiated settlement between Israel and Palestinians, and Jerusalem should ultimately be the shared capital of the Israeli and Palestinian states", she pointed out.
