IMD warns of thunderstorms in 13 states today

  • According to reports as many as 124 people lost their lives due to high-intensity dust storms in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan earlier this week

Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a mild thunderstorm and dust storm warning for the next 48 hours in New Delhi and its neighbouring states.

A heavy sand and thunder storm caused a lot of havoc in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, and 109 people lost their lives, while over 100s were injured, due to being hit by lightening. The current meteorological activity is not as strong as it was on May 2 (when a freak storm killed more than 100 people across India). The highest casualties were from Uttar Pradesh where nearly 73 persons were killed.

The MeT department warned of thunderstorm accompanied by squall and hailstorm in the mid and lower hills on May 7 and 8. Eight people were killed in Telangana, six in Uttarakhand and two in Punjab; almost 100 people were injured in the three states.

Thunderstorm accompanied with squall and hail very likely at isolated places over Uttarakhand, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir.

Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura, Bihar, West Bengal, Sikkim, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala are asked to be on high alert from Monday as there are chances of heavy rains and thunderstorm.
