A police officer was fatally shot early Friday night throughout a confrontation with a suspect who was later discovered injured, however died quickly afterward.

Chief Plasse said he was present when the officer was killed.

According to WTWO-TV in Terre Haute, officers were looking for a possible suspect in a homicide at an apartment complex when gunshots rang out.

Indiana State Police Criminal Investigation Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators continue to investigate the death of Pitts and the suspect. The suspect eventually died, but details were unclear.

Perhaps the first indication the barricaded suspect was badly wounded came earlier in the standoff, when a visibly upset woman yelled that the man - whom she called "Chris" - was bleeding out and demanded someone render aid.
