  • Baltimore County Executive and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Kevin Kamenetz has died following a cardiac arrest according to multiple reports

Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz (D) died early Thursday morning at a local hospital after suffering a heart attack overnight.

Born in Lochearn, Maryland, the youngest of five born to Miriam and Irvin Kamenentz, Kamenetz worked in his father's Overlea pharmacy in his youth. With relatively low taxes compared to Baltimore City that have not increased since he took office and an excellent public school system that includes several Blue Ribbon schools, Kamenetz had several accomplishments to brag about.

For Kamenetz, his interest in politics began early on.

Kamenetz's campaign has not stated what its plans are.

The two-term county executive leaves behind his wife, Jill, and two sons. Prior to serving as the County Executive, he was elected to the Baltimore County council where he served for 16 years. He won the county executive seat in 2010 and was reelected in 2014.

Under Maryland election law, Ervin has until May 17-40 days before the June 26 primary-to decide whether she wants to replace Kamenetz as the gubernatorial candidate or designate someone to run in his place. Hogan ordered state flags to be flown at half-staff Thursday.

The current information on Kamenetz's cause of death can be seen below. "He will be deeply missed".

Kamenetz had raised more money than anyone else in the field and was expected to have a shot at replacing Hogan in Annapolis. "We really don't know how to put it into words". "He had so much more to offer and was in the prime of his career", said U.S. Rep. "He was a dedicated public servant, and I considered him a friend", Shea tweeted. "He was exceptionally smart, extremely principled and always did what he felt was in the best interest of his community", Ruppersberger added. "Our prayers go out to his wife, Jill, his sons Karson and Dylan, and to his entire family", Hogan said.

The County Council will now have to vote on a replacement for Kamenetz to serve the remaining seven months of his term.
