  • N. Korea's Kim meets China's president ahead of Trump summit

South Korea's presidential office said the Chinese government notified Seoul about the Xi-Kim meeting in advance.

The meeting Monday and Tuesday in Dalian is the second between Xi and Kim in recent weeks, following Kim's March visit to Beijing - his first since taking power six years ago.

The two leaders apparently discussed their countries' relations, according to reports.

Comrade Chairman made a special trip to China to meet me again just after 40-odd days, Xi said, at a crucial time when the Korean Peninsula situation is undergoing profound and complex changes.

Pompeo made a secret visit to North Korea over the Easter weekend, becoming the first USA official known to have met Kim, to lay the groundwork for the planned summit.

For his part, Kim could be trying to improve ties with Xi - which have been frosty, to put it mildly - in case his outreach to Trump falls flat, analysts say.

The timing of the Xi-Kim meeting allowed them to emphasize their shared interests ahead of the trilateral summit, and before a meeting between Kim and U.S. President Donald Trump, expected in the next month or so.

Trump is to meet at the White House on May 22 with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who recently met with Kim.

Speculation had been swirling online earlier Tuesday of a mystery visitor to the northern Chinese province, including reports of a North Korean plane touching down.

Xi-Kim meeting took place amid concern in Beijing that the North Korean leader is getting too close to USA sidelining China pointing to its declining importance in the Korean Peninsula peace process.

Friday night's no-hitter is the second of 2018, coming nearly two weeks after Sean Manaea no-hit the Red Sox on April 22. Hosmer connected in the fifth off Tony Cingrani (0-2), who had relieved Ross Stripling at the start of the inning.

According to China's official Xinhua agency, Mr Kim and Mr Xi discussed bilateral issues, and the Chinese leader voiced his support for upcoming talks between North Korea and the US.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has visited the Chinese city of Dalian to meet President Xi Jinping, China's official Xinhua news agency reported on Tuesday.

While China and North Korea have always been allies, their diplomatic relationship grew rocky following Kim's rise to power in 2011.

In exchange for a revised peace treaty, South Korea has agreed to work in conjunction with the North to denuclearize the peninsula, disarming one of the most risky regions in the world in terms of atomic power and political instability.

After news of the meeting between the two leaders was released, Trump announced that he would be speaking to "my friend" Xi on Tuesday.

And finally, in the long term, the Global Times piece said China would act as an "indispensable companion" in North Korea's smooth social and economic transition.

China is North Korea's most important economic and diplomatic backer, but Beijing has been angered by Pyongyang's repeated nuclear and missile tests and supported tough United Nations sanctions against its Cold War-era ally.

North Korean state media KCTV said Kim flew to Dalian on Monday on his private jet, where he was welcomed by high-profile Chinese officials including Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Dalian was also the site of a 2010 meeting between Mr. Kim's father, Kim Jong-il, and Mr. Li, who is now China's premier. Others claimed to have spotted Red Flag limousines used by the statesmen, AP said.
