  • The Mariners series opener with the Tigers in Detroit was rained out Friday

The Seattle Mariners fell to the Detroit Tigers Sunday 4-5 after Robinson Cano left the game in the third with a broken right hand after he was hit by a pitch.

The Mariners announced later Sunday that Cano has a fractured fifth metacarpal.

Cano tried to get out of the way of an inside 88-mph fastball from Detroit Tigers starter Blaine Hardy, a graduate of Edmonds-Woodway High School, when the pitch hit off of the back of Cano's hand.

He was attended to by a trainer and left the game, replaced in the lineup by Andrew Romine.

Cano has been solid for Seattle this year, batting.289 with four home runs, 23 RBI and 24 runs scored.

The Tigers lead the Mariners 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh.

The Tigers send Mike Fiers (3-2) to the mound Monday night against Clevelands Carlos Carrasco (5-1) in the opener of a three-game series in Detroit. He hit 39 home runs in 2016, though that number dipped to 23 last season. Wade LeBlanc (0-0) starts for the Mariners against Jake Odorizzi (3-2).

Kyle Seager homered for Seattle, and Goodrum went deep for the Tigers (17-22).
