Cate Blanchett, the president of the jury for the 71 annual Cannes Film Festival, said that strides for women in Hollywood wouldn't happen overnight as a result of the Time's Up and #MeToo movements.

Discussion of gender and racial politics have been dominant themes ahead of this year's Cannes Film Festival, the first in the post-#MeToo era. Brought out to officially open the festival, he gestured for Blanchett to join him in the middle of the Palais des Festivals' stage.

"It's not the Nobel Peace Award, it's the Palme d'Or", Ms Blanchett said, trying to put things in perspective.

While Cannes organizers acknowledge the gender inequality, they insist this merely reflects the under representation of women directors in the cinema industry as a whole.

"For profound changes to occur, it needs to take place through specific actions", Blanchett said at a press conference in the South of France on Tuesday morning. "Our job is to deal with what is in front of us".

The Oscar-winning actors star in the film "Everybody Knows" which premieres at the fest tonight.

The Russian maker of such classics as "The Return" and "Leviathan" is regarded as one of the greatest directors in the world at the moment, with his last film "Loveless" the critics' favourite for the Palme d'Or past year.

Fremaux asserted that the festival is doing its best to improve the gender ratio in its selections and committees. Its jury president this year is Cate Blanchett.

This year, the festival has established a hotline for sexual harassment victims at Cannes. "There will be more and more (female filmmakers) in the future".

The White House released a statement on Monday about the delegation it will send to next week's ceremony in honor of the U.S. Speaking to Israeli media in February, Trump reiterated that the issue of Jerusalem is off the negotiating table .

"The cinema has always been in the hands of men", said Fremaux. Blanchett asked. "Not specifically". "Being attractive doesn't preclude being intelligent", she said.

He added that the Netflix drama, begun in 2017 when the streaming giant had two films in competition at Cannes, could have a third act.

Also on the jury that will decide this year's Palme d'Or are Russian filmmaker Andrey Zvyagintsev, Canadian director Denis Villeneuve, French director Robert Guediguian and Chinese actor Chang Chen.

On the Netflix debate, DuVernay only referenced the situation vaguely. "It was film that allows me to assert my voice in the world".

The film festival will not only bring Vietnamese cinema closer to the global friends but also help popularise the country's tourism and culture. French law prevents a film that plays in theaters from appearing on streaming services for three years.

Amidst the less starry line-up at the festival, the new "Star Wars" spin-off, "Solo" is the only Hollywood blockbuster.

But Danish provocateur filmmaker Lars von Trier will return to Cannes seven years after being declared "persona non grata" for joking about being a Nazi and having sympathy for Hitler. The Han Solo spinoff "Solo: A Star Wars Story" is set for an worldwide premiere on May 15.
