  • The President’s assertion he would not cut the number of troops in the region comes despite claims he is looking at reducing America’s military presence in the South

North Korea went forward in time by 30 minutes on Saturday, state media said, to match its clocks with those of the South following last week's inter-Korean summit. He told reporters on Friday that the date and venue of the first-ever U.S. -DPRK summit had already been set and will be announced "soon".

That decision saw the country change its time to UTC+8.5: a half hour behind South Korea - a move the North Korean leader last week said he would reverse.

President Donald Trump on Friday said the date and location have been set for a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, building suspense for the unprecedented talks, as South Korea said it would oppose a withdrawal of USA troops from the area.

Trump, speaking at the annual National Rifle Association in Dallas on Friday, says it was his "position of strength" that is bringing Pyongyang to the negotiating table.

The demilitarized zone, or DMZ, between North and South Korea, and Singapore are among the top choices being considered for the summit.

Accordingly, the two Koreas removed their propaganda loudspeakers this week. The police justified their actions by citing agreements made at the summit, as well as statements made by the South Korean Ministry of Unification.

North Korean defector-activists in the South are criticizing the South Korean government for restricting activities of civic groups.

He tweeted on Wednesday: "As everybody is aware, the past Administration has always been asking for three hostages to be released from a North Korean Labor camp, but to no avail".

"Pyongyang Time" was created as tensions between the authoritarian country and the US grew over Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program and worldwide sanctions aimed at dismantling it. Moon's office said news that the White House was considering drawing down troops was "not true at all".

On April 27, when US Secretary of Defense James Mattis was asked whether it would be necessary to maintain the American troops on the Korean Peninsula if indeed there was a peace treaty, he said that was part of the issues that the US would be discussing with its allies first beside North Korea.

Dozens of activists, including North Korean defectors, gathered near a lookout in the South Korean border city of Paju at around noon on Saturday.
