Twenty-three people were killed and 11 wounded after gas explosions tore through two neighbouring coal mines in southwestern Pakistan, officials said Sunday.

"Some died on the spot, while others who were badly injured breathed their last under the rubble", Atique said.

Officials said that the explosion was caused by increased volumes of methane. "The owners and managers of mining companies don't care for poor workers because for them money is more important than our lives", Akhtarzada, a survivor of the Marwar incident, said.

According to local media, about 25 people were in the mine when the explosion occurred.

The resolution said those found guilty of negligence be awarded punishments, mines where such fatal incidents took place be sealed and laws pertaining to safety of miners be implemented.

Chief of Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Muhammad Tariq also confirmed that 16 miners had been killed.

"So far 16 dead bodies and six injured miners have been recovered from the mine", he said.

In the second mine collapse, seven miners were killed in Sooranj area, also near Quetta.

The mines are mostly owned by state-run Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation, which leases many of them to private contractors.

At least 23 labourers were killed and several others suffered injuries when two coal mines caved in near Quetta on Saturday.
