Surprise summit between Kim Jong Un and South Korea's Moon

  • Korean leaders meet to salvage Trump Kim summit

The person, who asked not to be identified discussing internal matters, said the "maximum pressure" campaign to strangle North Korea's economy is working, and Kim's regime will have to come to the table eventually.

US officials appeared to be pressing ahead in the belief that the summit remains on the table.

Concerns grew earlier this month after North Korea responded to the U.S. calling for the denuclearisation of the peninsula and a complete dismantling of the nuclear programme by threatening to pull out of the summit unless Washington offered something in return. "And if they are they are ready to do that then ... we're certainly ready to have those conversations", she said.

After that, a senior White House official said the North had reneged on its promises ahead of the summit.

Of course, not everyone in South Korea is sympathetic to Kim Jong-un, no matter how jovial he may have seemed at the inter-Korean summit, or how hard South Korean President Moon has worked to cooperate with Pyongyang.

And despite Trump's speculation that Chinese President Xi Jinping may have encouraged Kim to take a harsher tone in recent weeks, Beijing, too, has a strong interest in the continuation of negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang.

Also, for talks to commence, North Korea must detail a preliminary roadmap as to what it would offer in terms of denuclearization.

And given Trump's entertainment background, other experts said it would be wise not to attempt to divine the machinations of the mercurial president until the dust settles.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday that North Korean officials had stopped communicating with USA officials in recent days.

The writer also rubbished Trump's thanks to Kim for their initially 'wonderful dialogue, ' saying 'You never spoke'.

Ryan Sheffield, who gave the president an F for his grammar, told Mr Trump he should probably "see me after class".

It would be bad if Real Madrid signed Neymar
He holds the notion that he has nothing to prove by being successful at another club. "They're one of the teams that could win the World Cup", Messi concluded.

But the erratic and brinksman-like diplomacy from the White House may have prompted South Korea to go onto the front foot to preserve the opportunity to reduce the threat on its border from a neighbour that had spent much of a year ago aggressively firing missiles into global air space and exploded its sixth nuclear device.

Trump called Friday's remarks by the North as "warm and productive".

Indeed, the idea of peace on a peninsula still technically at war has started to feel so real that there's a boom in property sales inside the demilitarized zone (DMZ).

"We have inwardly highly appreciated President Trump for having made the bold decision, which any other USA presidents dared not, and made efforts for such a crucial event as the summit", Kim Kye Gwan's statement said.

Interested in North Korea?

Saturday's meeting at the DMZ follows a daylong summit last month in which Moon and Kim embraced, planted a tree and talked alone for more than 30 minutes.

"We are having very productive talks with North Korea about reinstating the Summit which, if it does happen, will likely remain in Singapore on the same date, June 12th., and, if necessary, will be extended beyond that date", Trump tweeted.

What about Mr Trump's cancellation letter?

Notably, the statement did not appear in Saturday's edition of Rodong Sinmun, the official mouthpiece of the North's ruling party that's widely read by North Koreans. There, former leader Colonel Gaddafi gave up his nascent nuclear programme only for him to be killed by Western-backed rebels a few years later.

President Moon Jae-in had to scramble his national security team when news of Trump's decision first reached Seoul late Thursday evening as he called Washington's u-turn "shocking and very regrettable".
