The two leaders agreed to "meet frequently in the future to make dialogue brisk and pool wisdom and efforts, expressing their stand to make joint efforts for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula", Yonhap said, citing the Korean Central News Agency.

Reporters were not notified of the summit beforehand and it was only attended by the two Koreas' incumbent and former spymasters: South Korea's National Intelligence Service Director Suh-hoon and Kim Young-chul, former chief of the North's Reconnaissance General Bureau.

Moon's government has worked for months to help set up the first meeting between the leaders of North Korea and the U.S., where he hoped Kim and Trump would resolve a decades-old dispute over the North's weapons programme.

The office of the South Korean president said the outcome of Saturday's surprise meeting will be announced on Sunday.

A photo released by the South Korean presidential office showed Moon and Kim hugging at the conclusion of their discussions.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said in Capitol Hill at the weekend that the cancelled summit was "a good thing for Kim Jong-un".

While the United States did not announce the delegation's members, The Washington Post reported earlier Sunday that Sung Kim, a former United States ambassador to South Korea and former nuclear negotiator with the North, had been called in from his posting as envoy to the Philippines to lead the preparations.

United States officials said the final straw for Trump came when a North Korean Foreign Ministry official called Vice President Mike Pence a "political dummy" and hinted that Pyongyang was ready for a "nuclear showdown" should diplomacy fail.

He added that if necessary, the meeting "will be extended beyond that date".

Trump tweeted later Friday that the summit, if it does happen, will likely take place June 12 in Singapore, as originally planned. "We're talking to them right now". Their last meeting on April 27 was held on the South side.

Trump had said earlier Friday that the potentially historic summit might be getting back on track. "It could even be the 12th", Trump told reporters on the South Lawn of the White House before leaving for the US Naval Academy to deliver a commencement address.

For President Donald Trump, Kim Jong Un (kim jawng oon) may be the deal that got away. According to the official position of the White House, this decision was made as the North Korea authorities conducted aggressive political rhetoric.

Trump tweeted Sunday that North Korea "has brilliant potential and will be a great economic and financial Nation one day".
