The C-130 "Hercules" cargo plane from the Puerto Rico Air National Guard crashed around 11:30 am (1530 GMT) near the Savannah airport in the state of Georgia.

The crash occurred after take-off near the Hilton head airport in Savannah.

Two people were killed after a Air National Guard cargo plane crashed near an airport in Georgia, the AP reports, citing a deputy coroner.

According to news reports, the C-130 aircraft crashed at the intersection point at highway 21 and Crossgate road close to Savannah/Hilton head global airport, in an area of woods and light industry just northeast of the airport grounds on a clear morning. The plane narrowly missed people on the ground.

"It miraculously did not hit any cars, any homes", Effingham County Sheriff's spokeswoman Gena Bilbo said. "It is an absolute miracle".

Eight hours after the crash, she added: "To our knowledge there are no survivors".

A witness told the Savannah Morning News that the plane appeared to be flying very low before it crashed. He says "it nearly looked like it stalled and just went nearly flat right there in the middle of the highway".

An Air Force spokesperson specified the plane was a WC-130 weather reconnaissance plane, belonging to the 156th Airlift Wing.

Officials with the Puerto Rico Air National Guard have said the aircraft was 60 years old, but Boone said its age was closer to 40 years old. He said initial information indicated there were five to nine people aboard the plane, which was heading to Arizona.

Of the nine on the plane, five were crew members and four were passengers who were military maintenance and operations personnel, all from the Puerto Rico Air National Guard.

"We don't know the cause of the crash", he said.

Boone said the cargo plane was manufactured in the late 1970s and had been in Savannah for routine maintenance.

"This pains us", he said of the deaths. He declined to confirm the names or number of victims until their families have been notified.

Local media quoted the Federal Aviation Administration as saying that the plane, carrying five, was bound for an air base in Arizona. He said the CW-130 was headed there for retirement.

Paul Dahlen told The Associated Press that all those aboard were Puerto Ricans who had recently left the US territory for a mission on the USA mainland.

For his part, the assistant general of the GNPR commented that "on behalf of the great family of the National Guard of Puerto Rico I want to indicate that our prayers are with the families and loved ones of the crew members".
