  • Self-driving car crash in Arizona: Waymo car involved in Chandler crash

Chandler Police say the incident happened Friday afternoon when a Honda sedan swerved to avoid hitting another auto.

In February, Google said that its self-driving cars have driven 5 million miles on public roads since 2009. The Waymo van was reportedly hit by sedan after it swerved into the wrong lane in order to avoid another collision.

Meanwhile, the autonomous vehicle incurred lesser damage as it was presumably hit at an angle from the side.

The person in the driver's seat of the self-driving vehicle suffered minor injuries. First reports indicate the autonomous vehicle was not at fault in the crash - not the "violator vehicle", according to ABC 15 News. Onlookers and witnesses posted pictures of the crash, showing the sedan front-end totally wrecked within the crumple zone along with broken glass from its windshield and windows.

China trade talks resume in Beijing
The White House has sent a large delegation led by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to China to negotiate over trade issues. In doing so, China expected Washington to reciprocate and open its market to Chinese investment and competition, it said.

Detective Seth Tyler said the driver of that Honda had to swerve to avoid slamming into a auto that had the green light and was moving into the intersection. As the Honda swerved, the vehicle continued eastbound into the westbound lanes of Chandler Blvd.

Right now: Pretty gnarly crash with an @Waymo van in Chandler, AZ.

Chandler Police told PCMag that the crash occurred when the Honda sedan was traveling eastbound, but had to swerve to avoid striking another vehicle heading northbound. Both the Waymo vehicle and the Honda were towed from the scene.

Arizona has become a testing ground for the nascent technology of autonomous vehicles under Governor Doug Ducey, and the self-driving vehicles of Waymo and Uber are a common sight on Valley roads. "This incident is still under investigation", the statement was given by the local police to the Techcrunch.
