White House refuses comment about Sadler's McCain remark

  • John McCain 81 is at home in Arizona battling brain cancer. A White House aide on Thursday mocked his illness

The White House did not dispute the remark.

Less than 24 hours after McCain, R-Ariz., released an agonized statement in which he said he could not support the confirmation of Gina Haspel to direct the Central Intelligence Agency, his best friend in the Senate, Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., announced his support for Haspel, who once oversaw a Central Intelligence Agency secret prison where a terrorism suspect was tortured.

Meghan McCain lambasted the White House assistant who reportedly joked about her father's health condition, saying, "it doesn't matter, he's dying anyway".

As a GOP presidential candidate in 2015, Trump said McCain was "not a war hero" because he was captured in Vietnam, adding, "I like people who weren't captured". "That's why they call him 'Songbird John.'" He followed up and said that torture does work, according to People.

Can we stop saying the Trump administration has hit moral rock bottom every time they do something bad?

On Friday, the former vice president denounced Sadler's comments as the end of "decency" in an administration that already had that quality in extremely short supply. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Sadler is still employed but declined to go any further. Some colleagues said afterward that they were unhappy she made the remark, and the White House issued a written statement Thursday expressing respect for Mr. McCain. Haspel on Wednesday promised never to restart the torture program if she became the director, but she didn't want to say that it was "immoral", leading to continued criticism of her nomination. We have a respect for all Americans.

Theresa May told ministers to get 'hands on' over customs dispute
One cabinet minister told the Guardian: "The prime minister wants to find a way through this that keeps the party together". Under this proposal, Britain would collect tariffs on goods entering the country on the EU's behalf.

Sanders also confirmed that Sadler remained in her job.

McCain's wife, Cindy, responded with a tweet tagged to Sadler, "May I remind you my husband has a family, 7 children and 5 grandchildren". What's more, the White House is trying to simply brush it under the rug, which means the bulldozer is pressing forward.

"I don't understand what kind of environment you're working in when that would be acceptable and then you can come to work the next day and still have a job", she said. "He has served all his life and he has served the country well", said Gordon Gerson, president of McCain's Naval Academy class of 1958.

The White House is not expected to acknowledge or apologize for the comment, despite pressure from both Democrats and Republicans for a public apology.

Congressman Adam Kinzinger, a Republican and former US Air Force pilot in Iraq and Afghanistan, blasted Sadler.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. spent two days with McCain, one of his best friends, this week, and would not speculate whether the Arizona senator would resign his seat soon.
