In the most recent period studied (2014-2016), the rate was highest in Montana at 29.2 per 100,000 residents, compared with the national average of 13.4 per 100,000.

"We know from other research that most people who die by suicide have mental health conditions, though they may not have been formally diagnosed or treated", APA President Altha Stewart stated in a news release.

In 2016, 76.8 percent of people who committed suicide were male and of men 83.6 percent were non-Hispanic whites, reported the CDC.

"These findings are disturbing. We need to make sure we're viewing this from a public health perspective and that we're making it easier for people to get resources, that we are reducing factors that contribute to suicide", Ackerman said.

Suicide prevention largely focuses on addressing mental health treatment, the CDC found, suggesting that a wider variety of preventive measures could be taken.

Higher rates of substance abuse and drug addiction are also associated with higher suicide rates, Duarte said.

The nationwide suicide rate rose 30 percent during that time frame.

Almost 45,000 people committed suicide in 2016, making it one of three leading causes of death on the rise in the United States, along with Alzheimer's disease and drug overdoses.

Experts have said that researchers on suicide can garner a lot of information from this study and help develop strategies for prevention.

Research shows suicides are up in nearly every state across the country. Along with mental health training for police and correctional officers, the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services has pushed for education about removing prescription drugs from people's homes and reducing access to lethal weapons.

"Death by suicide is the ultimate Stage 4 event in the progression of many mental health conditions, whether or not they have ever been recognized and labeled". In 2015, more than 78% of those global suicides occurred in low- and middle-income countries.

"The most common method was firearm, followed by hanging or suffocation, followed by poisoning", Schuchat said.

Local suicide awareness advocates say it's an ongoing conversation which needs more attention.

And Richardson says the rise of social media may feed the increase. And so that's one of the things that this study really shows us.

"CDC data shows that suicide happens to everybody", he said.

Guns were the most common method used for suicide, accounting for nearly half of the people who died. "There are many different circumstances and factors that contribute to suicide".

Mental illness is not a communicable disease, but there's a strong body of evidence that suicide is still contagious.

The CDC study found, too, that suicide increased among all sexes, ages, races and ethnic groups.
