Almost 600 women dressed in white and seated on the floor of the Hart Senate office building were arrested by Capitol Police on Thursday.

Over 500 protesters -including one Democratic lawmaker- were arrested inside the US Capitol this week in protest of the Trump administration's crackdown on illegal immigration along the US-Mexico border.

The protesters were women who oppose the president and, in particular, his calls for a stricter immigration policy.

Nevertheless, chanting "We Care" and "Abolish ICE", the protesters demanded Congress act to end Trump's policies regarding unlawful border crossings.

"I'm proud to have been arrested with them to put myself in the camp of people who believe that the United States is better", Jayapal said in a video on Twitter.

Rybarikova pulled one break back but she got broken again immediately in game five, having to serve to stay in the match at 1-5. A double fault from Rybarikova led to another break and her continual errors ensured the match was swiftly levelled.

The Democratic senator Jeff Merkley of OR, who was one of the first to draw attention to children being held in detention camps along the border after being separated from their parents, appeared before the crowd.

The women first demonstrated outside the Justice Department before marching to the Capitol, where they took over the atrium and mezzanine of the Hart Senate Office Building.

The women chanted slogans such as "we care" and "where are the children" in a largely peaceful standoff with police, who ordered them to leave.

You can find more information about the rally on the event's website.

And dozens of protesters shut down a government meeting in MI in protest against a contract with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) agency to house detainees at a local jail.
