England vs Costa Rica: Player ratings for Rashford, Vardy, Welbeck and co

  • Costa Rica finished above England in their 2014 World Cup group

The Three Lions now have an 11-day break before they take on Tunisia in their World Cup opener and Rashford's performance poses a healthy dillema for Southgate.

Gareth Southgate will hand 19-year-old Trent Alexander-Arnold his England debut and Jack Butland will also start in goal.

Much has been made of the youthful squad who will represent the Three Lions in Russian Federation, which is the youngest England party to travel to a World Cup since Chile in 1962.

"On Thursday night, he just did what was required".

England controlled the encounter from that point on and wrapped up victory with 14 minutes to go when Welbeck met Dele Alli's cross with a diving header into the empty net.

And given England's World Cup routes, whether winning or coming second in group G sees them likely to face either Brazil or Germany in the quarter-finals (should they get that far and both teams win their groups as expected) this will be something Southgate needs to work on in the final days before they travel to Russian Federation.

Roy Hodgson's already-eliminated side brought the curtain down on their terrible finals foray with a lifeless goalless draw in Belo Horizonte.

Not long till we find out who he fields as the World Cup is less than a week away!

Excitement about the Three Lions' first visit to Leeds in 16 years was palpable and only fuelled by building World Cup anticipation.

One source asked by CNN whether the comment was meant as a joke replied: "To the degree one can ever take what is said as a joke". Trudeau has publicly denounced the "national security" justification for the new tariffs.

However, Real Madrid's Champions League-winning goalkeeper could only watch in wonderment in the 13th minute as the ball flew in.

The Manchester United forward scored a stunning 25-yard strike as the team beat Costa Rica 2-0 at a sold-out Elland Road.

Tasked with leading the line Rashford, partner-in-crime Jamie Vardy was almost in for a second but was well thwarted by Navas.

It was just reward for a fine first-half performance but England lost some of their rhythm after the break, as Southgate made a number of changes, including handing goalkeeper Nick Pope his first taste of worldwide football.

Costa Rica are in a tough group against Brazil, Switzerland and Serbia at the World Cup and while nobody would have expected them to win, even second place may be looking like a push at the moment.

England were on top without exerting too much pressure and got the second they deserved in the 76th minute.

The key question now for Southgate is whether he opts to play Rashford in attack alongside Harry Kane or whether Raheem Sterling will keep that role.

England were unable to find a way to add a third but emerged victorious - and seemingly without injury.
