At least 25 people are dead and dozens injured after Guatemala's Mt. Fuego - one of Central America's most active volcanoes - began spewing ash and lava.

At least six people were dead after Guatemala's Fuego volcano erupted Sunday, authorities said.

"Not everyone escaped, I think they were buried", Consuelo Hernandez said.

"Unfortunately El Rodeo was buried and we haven't been able to reach the La Libertad village because of the lava and maybe there are people that died there too", Cabanas explained, speaking on local radio.

The dead were from farming communities just south of the volcano who were trapped by hot lava flow, National Disaster Relief Agency spokesman David de Leon told reporters.

Sunday marked the second eruption this year for the 12,346-foot volcano.

Guatemala transport services have been ground to a halt, with the capital's La Aurora worldwide airport shutting down its only runway due to falling ash.

And then tonight in the finals on the biggest stage, when our team played well, played our ass off, man, it ain't right. A LeBron 3 in the third quarter put Cleveland up three, giving the Cavaliers their first lead of the second half.

Search and rescue operations for the missing and dead have been suspended due to low light and risky conditions, and will resume early on Monday morning, a spokesman for the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred) said in a WhatsApp group.

The National Disaster Management Agency (Conred) said a river of lava hit the village of El Rodeo, destroying houses and burning people inside.

There are also "missing persons, but we do not know how many", Cabanas said, adding that lava had blocked entry to several communities. "Currently the volcano continues to erupt and there exists a high potential for (pyroclastic) avalanches of debris", the disaster agency said via Twitter, quoting Sanchez, the director of the seismology and volcanology institute.

Police officers help the rescue effort in El Rodeo village.

It is close to the popular tourist destination Antigua, which is known for its coffee plantations.

The Directorate of Civil Aeronautics announced that La Aurora International Airport was closed because of the danger posed to planes by the ash.

In an official bulletin, the Guatemalan government revealed that ash columns reached more than 10 thousand meters above sea level and pyroclastic flows have descended from the burning crater.
