Nadal's set streak ended by Schwartzman as rain halts clash

Marterer, enjoying his best run on just his third appearance in the main draw of a major, performed with admirable composure and maturity that belied his 22 years and did force another break midway through the third set but ultimately could do little to halt the Nadal juggernaut.

Marin Cilic and Juan Martin del Potro were locked at 5-5 in a first-set tie-break when their quarter-final was suspended. A fired up Nadal was striking the ball relentlessly to reel off three straight games and move two points away from levelling the match before the rain came tumbling down again. Schwartzman saw two set points come and go but at the third time of asking, after a delay while a spectator was helped out after feeling ill, the Argentine ripped a forehand victor.

The players only managed another 20 minutes on court before more rain forced them off for the night, but it was enough time for momentum to switch in Nadal's favour.

It was a grueling baseline battle right from the start, with no less than 14 break points in the opening set that lasted for well over an hour.

How to watch Cavs vs Warriors online or on TV
Kerr says Thompson "was doing better this morning when he checked in with the training staff, so I'm hopeful he will play". Hill, defensively, didn't have a faultless Game 1, but that size makes it hard for Kerr and the Warriors to exploit him.

Nadal, who lost only two points in the first five games, will next play Germany's world number 70 Maximilian Marterer.

That proved costly as Nadal broke and then repeated the trick to move into a 5-3, 30-15 lead. It will be followed by the all-American matchup between Madison Keys and Sloane Stephens.

Two-time runner-up Halep came back from a set down for the second time in the tournament to see off 12th seed Kerber, who was bidding to become the first German woman in the last-four since Steffi Graf in 1999.

Sharapova made 27 unforced errors, was broken six times and served six double faults in only her fifth loss from 25 Grand Slam quarter-finals.
