UFC 225: How Can The Promotion Ever Trust Yoel Romero Again?

  • Yoel Romero Robert Whittaker

The UFC middleweight belt was not up for grabs but Robert Whittaker still did the job against Yoel Romero in Chicago on Sunday (NZT).

Ten fighters on the card have either been a UFC champion or have fought for a title at some point in their careers. Whittaker has now won nine bouts in a row.

Robert Whittaker won't have his undisputed UFC middleweight title on the line on Saturday when he takes on Yoel Romero. In their first fight he attempted half as many strikes as Whittaker but landed them at a higher rate. In the fifth, Romero controlled the round, bring down Whittaker with a series of left hands, then pounded with a right hand.

Allow Romero a third chance at UFC gold? However, Romero is no longer eligible to win the title.

Unlike their UFC 213 fight that was more of a high-powered chess match, the rematch was packed with fireworks and saw both fighters have their moments.

England vs Costa Rica: Player ratings for Rashford, Vardy, Welbeck and co
However, Real Madrid's Champions League-winning goalkeeper could only watch in wonderment in the 13th minute as the ball flew in. Tasked with leading the line Rashford, partner-in-crime Jamie Vardy was almost in for a second but was well thwarted by Navas.

However, Whittaker posted to Twitter following the weigh-in, with his message all but confirming his intention to fight Romero. Two judges scored the contest 48-47 for Whittaker, while a third had it 48-47 for Romero.

Bisping continued, saying he believes the Illinois Athletic Commission should have given Romero more time to get down to 185, adding "Forgive me for being crude, but you can go to the bathroom and get rid of that (0.2 pounds) pretty quick". Now that he is on the sidelines working more and more with FOX Sports, the former UFC middleweight champion remains that way.

"It's going to be a five-round fight".

In the opener on the main card, welterweight Mike Jackson (-200) is favored against CM Punk (+170) in a matchup that is as blank a slate as it gets, due to each man's inexperience in UFC.

The two fighters were introduced and faced off at the ceremonial weigh-ins later Friday. Anderson, who exited Invicta Fighting Championships on four straight wins, drops her Octagon debut, while Holm rebounded from her last bout, a decision loss to UFC featherweight champion Cristiane Justino.
