To mimic gore, they used makeup and pig's blood.

The security officers took his sweatshirt and shot it through with a gun.

Kiev police reported on Tuesday that Babchenko, who settled in Kiev after fleeing Russian Federation in February 2017 and worked as a host for the Crimean Tatar TV station, had been shot inside his apartment building and discovered there by his wife. "Maybe they wanted to collect proof that would be 100 percent solid", he told reporters.

On Tuesday, it was reported on Ukrainian social media that Babchenko, who moved to Ukraine in 2017, was shot dead in the stairwell of his apartment building, information which was later confirmed by the Ukrainian authorities.

Vasily Gritsak, head of the Ukrainian Security Service, told a news conference on Wednesday the agency faked Babchenko's death to catch those who were trying to kill him. "We watched.at a studio of a TV channel and I realized that I burst into tears and it was tears of joy".

Arkady Babchenko, the "murdered" journalist who appeared alive at a press conference in Ukraine yesterday, has described how he staged the fake killing to avoid the fate of poisoned former Russian spy Sergei Skripal.

"Thank God, the man is alive", he said. He was taken in an ambulance to a hospital intensive care unit, where a forensic expert officially "documented" his death. After that, he ended up in a morgue that he said was "freezing as hell".

"I don't care whether you believe it next time.as when I'm dead it won't matter to me anymore", said Babchenko.

China's commerce ministry says U.S. trade delegation arrives
But in subsequent weeks, negotiations with China focused on narrower concerns, such as the bilateral trade deficit. The United States will review visa procedures to reduce economic theft by non-traditional intelligence collectors.

Babchenko disclosed for the first time details of how he had helped fake his own death. Relations between the two countries have been strained since 2014, when Russian Federation annexed Crimea and separatists backed by Moscow in eastern Ukraine have fought government troops in a conflict that has killed more than 10,000 people.

"This journalist's reappearance is a great relief but it was distressing and regrettable that the Security Service of Ukraine played with the truth", Reporters Without Borders secretary-general Christophe Deloire said in a statement. It also brought widespread criticism from press freedom groups. The British Government has accused Russian Federation of orchestrating the plot. Some media organisations said the staged plot undermined the credibility of journalists.

Anton Gerashchenko, an adviser to the Ukrainian minister of the interior, likened the plot to a story from a crime novel.

"What would you want? If they came to you and said there is a hit out on you", Babchenko said.

"I'm planning to have a good sleep, get drunk and fall asleep while drunk and think about nothing for the next two or three days", he said. The unidentified Ukrainian man in turn allegedly hired an acquaintance to be the gunman, Gritsak said.

The alleged organizer, Boris German, was arraigned Thursday night.

The SBU said it received information about a plot to kill 30 people in Ukraine, including Babchenko, but had thwarted it. The Ukrainian Security Services said the plan to thwart the attack was "normal" because "Sherlock Holmes did it". "If this does allow [SBU] to find definitive proof that Russian special services are behind this, then you could argue that it was worth it", OCCRP's Lozovsky says.
