  • India Has Set Example By Committing To Beat Plastic Pollution UN

"Beat Plastic Pollution" - the theme for World Environment Day 2018 - is a call for action on plastics pollution.

With the theme of the Wednesday 2018 being "Beat Plastic Pollution", Modi noted that the menace was already having a deadly impact on India's marine ecosystem and marine litter, especially micro-plastic, was a major trans-boundary problem.

Early in the morning, a Green Walkathon was carried out in the township wherein General Managers, Head of Departments, employees, CISF officials, office bearers of ladies club, unions and associations and children participated in large number to spread the message of combating plastic pollution and making the environment greener and healthier.

Celebrating World Environment Day today, the inhabitants of Jindal Nagar pledged to "Beat Plastic Pollution" in their day to day life.

Emefiele said: "It is horrifying to learn that across the world, plastic make up about 85 per cent of marine litter; with micro-plastics in the air, water and food - having an unknown impact on human health".

One of such alternatives he said would be encouraging the use of paper bags as alternatives to plastic bags.

Some 86% support supermarkets moving towards more refillable and reusable packaging instead of single-use plastics and more than nine out of 10 (91%) think they should be working towards reducing their overall packaging.

Millions of people from over 100 countries including Brunei Darussalam have taken part over the years, helping drive change in consumption habits as well as in national and global environmental policy.

Naysan Sahba, director of the UN Environment Program's Division of Communications and Public Information, said India is "very active" in tackling issues related to environmental pollution.

The activities for the week include a panel discussion on "Beating Plastic Pollution in Africa".

"Each year, while five trillion plastic bags are used and 17 million barrels of oil go into plastic production, 13 million tonnes of plastic leak into the ocean and 100,000 marine animals are killed by it".

"Our world is swamped by harmful plastic waste".

Mr Modi said, Government's Make in India campaign has focus on zero defect and zero effect manufacturing which means manufacturing without defect and which does not harm the environment. Guterres encouraged everyone to also stop using plastic products which are designed just to be thrown away such as plastic bottles.
