Lewis Hamilton went from 14th to first to seize a "miracle" German Grand Prix victory for Mercedes on Sunday and retake the Formula One championship lead from Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, who crashed.

Having arrived at Hockenheim eight points behind his rival, he travels to the Hungarian Grand Prix with an advantage of 17 points.

On an extraordinary day, Hamilton's victory then hung in the balance for close to 90 minutes after he was hauled in front of the stewards for aborting a late pit-stop, cutting across the grass, and re-joining the track.

You would think that Lewis Hamilton couldn't be much happier right now. We've got quite a good group of fans in England.

When the race resumed, Mercedes held their breath as Hamilton and Bottas went wheel-to-wheel for the lead before they called off the fight as the team sealed a one-two finish on home turf.

Rain washed out most of Saturday's final German Grand Prix practice session, with less than half the Formula One grid setting a lap time.

"I just can't believe. well I can believe it". "And we need to progress for the next races because that is the most important". After another indirect order, Raikkonen added "So you want me to let him (past)?" Small mistake, big disappointment.

Ozil resignation took Germany coach Loew by surprise
Not because of some picture, of of political decision. It's time for changes!" "No, absolutely no", he said. The SABC's Ira Spitzer reports from Berlin.

"Put your energy, any negative energy, whatever energy you have and put it towards trying to do your best next day, for another opportunity to rise -- so I'll give it everything tomorrow and see how I can get up but it's not going to be like Silverstone".

The race was off to a straightforward start, as the top 3 maintained their positions, with Hamilton and Ricciardo overtaking the mid-level cars as expected.

"We all have dreams and they just seem so impossible to reach but I have done it time and time again", Hamilton said.

"The kart that I had was really, really old and had been owned by about five different families".

The achievement, helped by chaos around him and Ferrari title rival Sebastian Vettel crashing out from the lead, left the new championship leader struggling to contain his emotion.

Hamilton, who was already up to fifth after 14 laps, had made his first set of soft tyres last for 42 laps but pitted before the rain came and went to ultrasofts.

"It is a very hard call because on the one side you want to optimise the result and that is what you need to do, but on the other side you need to give both drivers a chance to win the race", said Wolff.
