  • Fox is 9th casualty after jaguar's weekend escape at zoo

It is not immediately clear how the animal escaped.

A seventh animal has died after a jaguar escaped from its habitat at the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans. The only "big cat" native to the Americas, adult male jaguars can reach six feet long and weigh up to 250 pounds.

While there were no people injured, "sadly, four alpacas, one emu and one fox" were all killed, the zoo said in a statement.

The animals were attacked Saturday morning, when a jaguar escaped an exhibit, initially killing 6 other animals. The alpaca that died overnight Sunday was the zoo's last living alpaca.

Zoo curator Joel Hamilton said the jaguar will not be euthanised.

The zoo released an update on its website Sunday morning announcing the passing along with the conditions of the other two injured animals.

There were no human injuries in the incident, and the zoo says that an after-action review will take place as well as an investigation into how the jaguar escaped.

"From our initial inspection, it appears the roof of the habitat was compromised".

Despite sympathy for the lost animals, many online couldn't blame Valerio for doing what jaguars do.

"We certainly are not going to euthanise the animal over this".

The zoo is offering grief counseling to their staff in response to the incident.
