CDC Issues Warning About Kellogg's Honey Smacks: 'Do Not Eat This Cereal'

Kellogg in June recalled an estimated 1.3 million cases of its Honey Smacks cereal from more than 30 USA states due to the potential for Salmonella contamination.
Back in mid-June the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a bulletinwarning consumers that Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereal could potentially be contaminated with Salmonella.
In interviews, 43 people specifically reported eating Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereal.
The Food and Drug Administration says retails still can not legally sell Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereal following a recall. It's still not clear how the contamination might have occurred. No deaths have been reported in the latest outbreak.
The agency said that epidemiological and laboratory evidence indicates the cereal is behind the multistate salmonella Mbandaka outbreak. Cases have come in from 33 states and roughly one-third of those affected have had to be hospitalized.
"Even if some of the cereal has been eaten and no one got sick, throw the rest of it away or return it for a refund", it said. Tests also confirmed the strain in samples of leftover Honey Smacks cereal from the homes of sickened people in Montana, New York, and Utah. The outbreak began on June 8, prompting Caito Foods, LLC to recall precut watermelon, honeydew melon, cantaloupe and fruit medley products produced at the Caito Foods facility in Indianapolis.
If you store cereal that looks like Kellogg's Honey Smacks in a container without the packaging and don't remember the brand or type, throw it away.
Symptoms of salmonella infection include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps and typically present 12 to 72 hours after exposure to the bacteria.
Some cases turn so severe that patients need to be hospitalized. Most infections usually last four to seven days and most people recover without treatment.
